Complications Associated with Cataract Surgery

xEven with the many advances that have been made in the field of cataract surgery, including the advent of laser cataract treatment, it’s important to note that all surgical procedures carry some degree of risk. With that in mind, our experienced cataract surgeon, Dr. Michael Manning, has made cataract surgery a large focus of our practice. He has successfully performed this procedure on many individuals, and his skills and expertise, combined with utilization of state-of-the-art technology, allow him to minimize risks associated with this procedure.

Some of the potential complications of cataract surgery include:

  • Posterior Capsule Opacity – a condition that can impair vision after cataract surgery
  • Malpositioned/dislocated intraocular lens
  • Minor eye inflammation
  • Retinal detachment
  • Corneal or retinal swelling
  • Ocular hypertension – increased pressure inside the eye
  • Bleeding or infection inside the eye leading to significant vision loss or blindness (very rare)
  • Ptosis – drooping eyelid

Remember, Dr. Manning and our team here at Gulfcoast Eye Care take extraordinary precautions to minimize risks. While there is always the possibility – however slight – that a complication can arise, our cataract surgeon has a proven record of success with this procedure and does everything he can to ensure the safest possible procedure and a healthy recovery. During your initial eye evaluation and consultation, our doctor will explain all aspects of cataract surgery and address any concerns you may have. The advanced techniques available at our practice, coupled with adherence to post-surgical care instructions, can significantly increase the likelihood of successful cataract surgery, elimination of the threat posed by cataracts, and improved vision.
