Nearsightedness (Myopia)
Nearsightnedness, also called Myopia, is a condition that occurs when the eye is longer than normal or has a cornea that is more curved than normal. This causes light rays to focus not directly onto the retina but in front of it. What you will notice is that close objects appear to be clear but distance objects appear out-of-focus.
Myopia is at least partially inherited and is often first noticed in children when they are between eight to twelve years of age. When the body grows rapidly such as during puberty and teenage years, myopia may become worse. Between the ages of 20 and 40, there is usually very little change.
When you have myopia, it is important to undergo regular eye examinations as you may be at a higher risk for certain conditions. For example, with more severe amounts of myopia, you may be at an increased risk for retinal detachment. Should this problem occur, a surgical procedure might be the only way to treat this condition.
