Is LASIK Permanent?
LASIK surgery has the ability to correct a number of common refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. For the vast majority of our patients at Gulfcoast Eye Care, the results of LASIK surgery last decades. However, since LASIK works by altering the surface of the cornea, future changes that may occur inside of the eye can still affect your vision.
While many patients experience the positive effects of LASIK for many years after the initial procedure, some may experience changes in the eye’s natural lens sooner than others. There are a couple of options available to adjust for these changes. Some patients may opt for a LASIK enhancement procedure, in which slight adjustments can be made to address any decrease in visual acuity and to restore clear vision. Other patients may choose to wear corrective eyewear only during specific activities such as driving or reading, when their vision is most affected.
While every individual is unique and the specific characteristics of their eyes are different, it’s important to remember that LASIK is designed to correct visual refractive errors with long-term results, reducing – or even eliminating – the need for corrective eyewear for many years after surgery.
