Visian ICLTMImplantable Collamer Lens
Page Updated:
Gulfcoast Eye Care offers a variety of vision correction procedures to ensure that you and your eye doctor can choose the treatment that best suits your lifestyle and vision needs. ICL, which stands for implantable contact lens or implantable collamer lens, is an advanced procedure that can significantly improve vision, even for patients who are not candidates for LASIK.
The Visian ICL is a microscopic lens that is surgically placed between your iris (the colored part of your eye) and your natural lens. Visian ICL is made of biocompatible collamer material and each lens is custom ordered by your ophthalmologist to match your prescription. ICL surgery is an outpatient procedure. Your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic eye drops and patients typically find the surgery to be painless. Your ICL surgeon will make a small incision in your cornea to place the lens. The incision is generally self-healing and no stitches are required.
In addition to standard ICL options, the Visian Toric ICL is available to treat astigmatism. A very common refractive error, astigmatism creates blurry vision at all distances. The Toric ICL represents an expansion in the number of patients who may benefit from ICL and is an exciting development for vision correction patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism.
Once your Visian ICL is in place, you can notice an immediate improvement in vision. Unlike a standard contact lens, you should not be able to feel the lens at all and no one will be able to see the lens. You will need to plan for a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery. Patients are typically able to resume regular activities about 2 days after their ICL procedure.
If you would like to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses, ICL may be right for you. ICL may be an option for patients who do not qualify for LASIK because of dry eyes or thin corneas. Schedule a consultation appointment at one of our offices in Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, or St. Petersburg, to learn if ICL could be right for you. In general, good candidates for ICL:
