What are the Symptoms of Macular Degeneration?

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

When it comes to vision loss, macular degeneration is the leading cause in patients over 60. As we age, the eye’s macula – which constitutes the central area of the retina – is subject to wear and tear. In addition to the natural aging process, abnormal cholesterol levels or smoking can increase your risk of developing macular degeneration.

The symptoms of macular degeneration, otherwise known as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD), may include:

  • A blind spot in the center of your vision
  • An “empty area” in the center of your vision
  • Distorted vision that causes bends or waves
  • Overall blurry vision

If you have vision abnormalities or difficulty seeing clearly, please make an appointment with your eye doctor right away. At Gulfcoast Eye Care, Dr. Jason Handza is our in-house retina specialist and can determine if your symptoms are indications of macular degeneration. If you are diagnosed with the condition, he can design a treatment plan to to address the symptoms. For more information about macular degeneration, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Handza, please contact our office today.
