FREEDOM FROM GLASSES STARTS HERE

Refractive Lens Exchange in Tampa Bay, Florida

If you are over 45, you have likely noticed that reading is getting harder. Night driving may feel less clear. You may be switching between glasses, readers, and contact lenses throughout the day.

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is designed to solve this.

REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE (RLE)

What Is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive lens exchange surgery is a procedure that removes the eye’s natural lens and replaces it with a clear artificial intraocular lens IOL. The new lens of the eye is selected to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and age-related changes in reading.

The procedure is similar to cataract surgery. The difference is timing. With refractive lens exchange RLE, we remove the natural lens before significant cataract development occurs. This improves vision now and prevents cataracts in the future.

RLE PROCEDURE

How the RLE Procedure Works

During the RLE procedure, the natural lens is gently removed and replaced with a customized artificial intraocular lens IOL.

RLE eye surgery is performed one eye at a time, and patients return home the same day. Because refractive lens exchange removes the natural lens completely, you cannot develop cataracts in that treated eye later.

Many patients choose refractive lens exchange (RLE) because it addresses both current vision problems and future cataract development in one step.

CANDIDATE FOR RLE

Who Is a Good Candidate for RLE?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are over 45 or 5
  • Depend on readers or progressive glasses
  • Have refractive errors that continue to change
  • Are not a strong candidate for LASIK or PRK

Patients with thin corneas or early cataract development often do better with refractive lens exchange than laser vision correction. If you have been told you are not a candidate for LASIK, you may still be a candidate for RLE.
