Vision correction surgeries such as LASIK have allowed millions of people with refractive errors reduce their reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

What Is A Refractive Error?

Clear vision requires several parts of the eye to work together in harmony. Your cornea and lens, which are in the front of your eye, filter light to the retina in the back of the eye, which then transmits images to your brain through your optic nerve. If the shape of your cornea prevents light from bending (refracting) at the correct angle toward the retina, then your vision will be imperfect due to a refractive error.

If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses in order to see clearly, then you likely have one or more of these four refractive errors:

  • Myopia is commonly known as nearsightedness and means that you have difficulty seeing far away.
  • Hyperopia or farsightedness, indicates that you can see at a distance but have trouble seeing at close range however can cause trouble seeing both distance or close range depending upon the severity.
  • Presbyopia commonly affects people over 40 and creates difficulty seeing up-close. This age-related near vision loss is the reason for needing reading glasses.
  • Astigmatism is a common refractive error that causes vision to be blurry at any distance and often occurs along with myopia or hyperopia.

While eyeglasses or contact lenses can correct most refractive errors, many people feel frustrated by their dependence on glasses or contacts. Fortunately there are several advanced vision correction options that can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses.

LASIK surgery is a popular vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. At Gulfcoast Eye Care we offer all-laser LASIK for improved precision and accuracy.

This is also called Photo-Refractive Keratectomy or Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) and is very similar to LASIK. While PRK has a slightly longer recovery time, it is better suited for some patients, including those with thinner corneas or those who are active in contact sports or physical labor.

The ICL (Implantable Collamer Lenses) procedure is designed for permanent and maintenance free vision correction by the placement of a micro lens that does not need cleaning or removal. ICL treats myopia and astigmatism and may be an option for patients whose nearsightedness is too severe to be corrected by LASIK, as well as patients with thinner corneas or dry eyes.

Reading Vision Solutions for Presbyopia

Most people between the ages of 40 and 60 begin to notice increased difficulty focusing on objects at a near distance, which can interfere with reading and other up-close tasks. There are several options to treat this refractive error.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

In an RLE procedure, your eye’s natural lens is replaced with an advanced intraocular lens (IOL). There are a variety of IOLs available that can correct astigmatism and vision at multiple distances to help you greatly reduce or even eliminate your dependency on corrective eyewear. RLE also treats or prevents the development of cataracts.

Monovision LASIK

Monovision LASIK corrects one eye for distance vision and the other eye for near vision. Since not everyone is able to adapt to monovision, patients typically need to trial monovision with contact lenses prior to surgery.

Corneal Inlays

A corneal inlay is a tiny surgical implant that is placed in one eye (the non-dominant eye) to improve near vision.
