How is AMD (Macular Degeneration) Treated?

gulfcoast3

Smoking, high cholesterol, and the natural aging process can all lead to the development of macular degeneration (or AMD). To keep these risk factors in check and reduce the risk of macular degeneration, retina specialist Jason Handza, DO often recommends routine exercise, weight management, a healthy diet, and avoiding tobacco – many of the same precautions used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. If Dr. Handza diagnoses you with macular degeneration during an eye exam, he can create a treatment plan designed to meet your needs.

There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. Depending on the type of the disease for which you are diagnosed, specific vitamin supplementation or medications can often be used to address the symptoms. By monitoring your treatment progress, Dr. Handza may be able to reduce some of the effects of macular degeneration and slow the progression of the condition.
