Medical vs Vision Insurance: What You Need to Know

Understanding the difference between medical and vision insurance can help you avoid unexpected costs and feel more prepared for your visit. The type of insurance used depends on why you are coming in, whether it is for routine vision care or a medical eye concern. Here is how each type of coverage works and what it means for your care.

Vision Insurance

Vision care plans, such as EyeMed or VSP, are designed for routine eye care. Insurance for eye care typically includes:

  • Basic eye exams
  • Eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions

These plans are usually limited to use once every one to two years and are intended for patients without active eye conditions.

Medical Insurance:

Medical insurance is used when your visit involves eye health concerns or medical conditions, such as:

  • Eye pain or irritation
  • Redness or infection
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Dry eye

If your visit focuses on your eye health or a change in vision related to a medical condition, this insurance is often the appropriate coverage.

Can You Use Both Medical and Vision Insurance?

In most cases, medical insurance and vision insurance cannot be used during the same visit.

If you are being fit for contact lenses, a separate fitting fee will apply, which varies based on the type of lenses. Our team can provide current pricing and help you understand your options.
