Can I Decrease My Risk for Cataracts?

A recent study from the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology found that long-term daily multivitamin supplement use may lower cataract risk in men (a 9% decrease in risk). While the decrease in risk of cataract development was relatively small, I am happy to see the results of this study. Very few studies have demonstrated possible preventive steps for our patients. One other study, for example, showed some decrease in cataract development risk by taking oral vitamin C supplementation. I am reassured by this new study as I routinely recommend my patients at Gulfcoast Eye Care take a combination eye vitamin/multivitamin that is available through my office.

To find the right multivitamin for eye health, I recommend:

  • Looking for a reputable manufacturer that is recommended by your ophthalmologist
  • Consulting with your primary physician before starting any supplementation
  • Checking the expiration date to ensure the product is fresh
  • Finding a product with high doses of antioxidants, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin

Antioxidants are generally considered to have an anti-aging effect, and these vitamins have shown to be helpful in preventing cataract formation and in decreasing the rate of development of macular degeneration.

Though there is no way to guarantee cataract development prevention, my practice does offer the latest treatment options for cataract surgery for patients with impaired vision from cataracts. From state-of-the-art diagnostic testing to laser cataract surgery to innovative intraocular lens implants, we are fully equipped to help you see clearly again.
